Is Battlefield: Bad Company 1 required to play to understand Battlefield: Bad Company 2?

I got Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and it just hit me that it is "2" and its a sequel. I bought it because the graphics are appealing and the destruction of buildings etc are too. I was wondering, does anybody know if the first game has to be played to understand the story of the sequel? Kind of in the CoD4 and MW2 way, where you can't understand the second very well if you haven't played the first. Anybody? Is Battlefield: Bad Company 1 required to play to understand Battlefield: Bad Company 2?
if u want to get some of the jokes they make then yes.

otherwise, you will get it.

Haggerd is a demolition expert and loves to blow up things,

sweetwater got transferred to b company after he accidently uploaded a virus to the main military computer servers,

sarge just wanted to get his retirement closer so he transferred, and preston stole a helicopter or something. Is Battlefield: Bad Company 1 required to play to understand Battlefield: Bad Company 2?
No, not really. youll understand most of it. but wikipedia it if you want to completely understand it all.Is Battlefield: Bad Company 1 required to play to understand Battlefield: Bad Company 2?
Not at all, and as far as online play is concerned, they have added so much in the sequel it makes the first pale in comparison.
I have both and if you kinda want to know what "Bad Company" is about or about the characters orgins like how sweetwater is a nerd and why he is in bad company and also why sarge is so close to retirement as well as in bad company or why haggard is obsessed with everything that goes BOOM! and why he is put in bad company as well or how the rookie marlowe came to be then you should definitely get it it's just as fun as bad company 2 after all that's why there's a sequel if there wasn't one we would not be playing such a badass game now would we ? :D
