For one, you have to be playing in a ranked match for your points to actually count towards your rank. 2nd, if you level up during the match you have to exit and restart multiplayer for your unlock to take effect.
Does he have the game? If so, then that's why he can level up.

their still fixing problems with the demo. some people rank up to 4 and than go back to 0 and can't rank up after that... just be patient and no worries battlefield BC is a great game definitley a buy.
they were fixing the stats server they said they fixed it and there gonna restart it tuesday againHow come it wont let me level up in the Battlefield Bad company demo?
i'm having the same problem but im sure its just too many people trying to get online and they cant fix it because its just a demo and it should be fixed when the game comes out hope this helps.
